State Senator Peggy Lehner Receives Legislator of the Year Award

For her commitment to education, students and choice, OAPCS honored State Senator Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering) with its inaugural Legislator of the Year Award at the OAPCS 9th Annual Charter Schools Conference November 13, 2015.

Senator Lehner, who is serving her first full term for the 6th Ohio Senate District, helped guide the state’s most comprehensive charter school legislation (House Bill 2) from concept to an overwhelming bipartisan approval on October 7, 2015. She formed a law review committee, of which OAPCS was a part, to assemble key stakeholders and education experts during the bill’s initial phase. Senator Lehner is Chairwoman of the Senate Standing Committee on Education and Vice-Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee.

In her introduction of Senator Lehner during the awards ceremony, OAPCS CEO Dr. Darlene Chambers noted, “she always held at the forefront that the well-being of Ohio’s children should be the first and most important reason that sound public policy is created and sustained.”

In her acceptance speech, Senator Lehner described HB 2 as “not the end, but the beginning.”

“We will do more and we will do better for charter schools,” Senator Lehner added.
